How to get there:
The village of Santa Maria is a natural and good starting point.
Drive a fairly rough local road from the town and up to the col
located at N17.11013, W095.99553, elevation about 2830 meter.
There is a large parking area on the left side of the road.
Route description:
There is a nice trail running from the parking
area to the summit.
This trail first gains the main ridge, then follows this along a gentle section.
Higher up, the trail runs on the right hand side doing a climbing traverse to regain the
main ridge. Finally,
the route again follows the top to the highest summit located
where the ridge drops significantly.
Comments:
We stayed in a nice hotel, Hotel La Cuarta Estación, in Santa Maria.
Leaving around 0600, we were ready to hike by 0645.
A very nice and easy trail could be followed
all the way to the summit.
We were there at 0750, so 1:05 up. Good views, a nice morning. The summit area
had unfortunately, a lot of litter all over. Mexican hikers should learn to
carry their garbage back! We stayed 20 minutes, then returned to our car in
one hour.
Here is a local youtube video
(in Spanish) describing the
mountain and a hike to the summit.
