How to get there:
The town of Jargalan may serve as a good point
of reference. From there travel south-west to
reach higher ground. The road near the camp climbs a pretty
steep hill, but any proper 4WD should have little problem
driving up to location N46.82176, E095.81096, elevation
near 2580 meter.
Route description:
From camp, first pass the small forest on the left side, then
ascend the ridge
and follow this to the summit.
There are 3 cairns, the first 2
facing the ridge of ascent. The 3rd.
cairn marks the highest point.
Comments:
Here is a quick summary of peaks climbed in Mongolia August 2024.
We left the town
of Altai around noon after a nice night at a good
hotel. This was the first hotel
in 3 weeks, good to have wifi and
take a shower.
The drive across to our new base camp took quite some time. We stopped
and had a picnic lunch then continued driving mostly cross-country.
We arrived at a very nice spot
for a camp around 1700.
Steven had an acute case of summit fever and immediately started out.
The climb is about 1000m vertical in 4 kilometer along a ridge route.
I expect him back by 2000. I will have a good night sleep in my tent
and climb the mountain tomorrow after breakfast.
Steven returned in about 2.5 hours, good to have a run for young people.
We had Mongolian BBQ,
lamb - very tasty. Breakfast tomorrow at 0530,
walk at 0600. Now, late in the evening, it has started to rain.
Hopefully, this will end sometime during this night.
I got up at 0530, but nobody were up and no breakfast. Obviously,
todays start will be a bit later. There were still stars in the
sky and surprisingly dark. Thus perfectly OK to start a little
later.
Breakfast came at 0600 and we started hiking at 0625. A nice, sunny morning.
In the beginning, we had a pretty strong headwind, I needed to use my mountain
jacket. Higher up, the wind subsided and we had a nice (easy) scramble along
the ridge
to the summit, arriving there
at 0835. Good views all around. We
started back down at 0855 and reached camp by 1025, a 4 hour total round trip.
Soon, we were ready to continue to Sutai.
As it turned out, we needed to drive back
to Altai, the take advantage of a paved road.
