How to get there:
From the town of Amayo, drive to location N07.14173, E036.56803, elevation near 2500 meter. A trail starts near here.
Route description:
The route runs pretty much directly uphill from the trailhead. There is a steeper (crux) section going uphill right that may be easily seen when approaching from below. The trail is mostly loose sand or sections of hard clay. It is steep enough that a fall could be very unpleasant. Caution is needed. Higher up, one leaves the main trail left. A small trail may be followed to the summit. A track is posted on Peakbagger.
Comments:
After climbing Zalalo (North Argun) the previous day, we drove to the town Laha and spent the night there. The next morning, we drove back to Amaya and continued to the base of the mountain. I asked Ayu to stop when we were pretty much directly below the peak. Stopping the car there, we identified two young men that were happy to walk with me to the top. Their names were Admasu and Atnafu, very friendly and good companions.
We started out around 1300 and followed a trail that headed directly uphill. I could see the steeper part of this ascent ahead, a steep uphill going somewhat right when seen from below.
The steeper section started with a short scramble, but the more difficult part was higher up. Quite steep with few places to hold. Absolutely a section that should be given respect and caution. Above this first step, the trail continues on a more gentle slope.
Higher up, a few more steepish sections, but certainly easier than the lower crux. Finally, one observes that a plateau has been reached. The route now forks left, leaving the main trail to locate the highest area. This highest area is a bit unfortunately, a pretty flat place with lots of vegetation. I wandered a bit around in the bush, checking that the terrain was sloping downwards in all directions. The ascent had taken 2 hours.
We took a brief rest at the side of the vegetation where we had some open views. Then started to descend. The descent was quite straightforward, I walked carefully down the lower crux section. Back down in 1:45, we were quite happy with another good day, driving back to Amayo in order to end the day there.
