Monte Miletto

How to get there:
Note: One may also access this mountain from a ski-area located more on the
north-east side. The ascent from that side certainly requires less effort, but likewise it is less
nice due to the ski area lifts and service roads.
Route description:
Head up the road, but go right at the first fork (slightly downhill), continue
up the rough trail and pick up the small trail (little use) marked with the normal red/white paint.
Follow it up the small valley, first on the left side, then later on the right side of the
drainage. When you arrive at a small, local crest at roughly 1400 meter of elevation, turn left.
This is at location N41.43382, E014.38740. Follow a small ridge, there are a few (old) marks of red
paint, but no clear trail. Continue in the same direction, you will see a small local col straight ahead
up above some trees. Continue this way (uphill) and you should pick up a trail again with
some scattered tral markers (red paint). There are lots of trails made by cows, but the correct one
tend to be bigger and it should zig-zag up among the trees and eventually reach the small col at location
N41.43776, E014.38258, elevation about 1580 meter. Just go to this waypoint if things are unclear further
down.
From here, everything becomes quite obvious as you see the actual summit
of Miletto straight ahead. There is a
trail that traverses up along (but below left) the ridgeline that extends from this location and towards
the base of the nicely shaped mountain. Follow this trail, it runs a long way around the peak. It may be
better to just ascend directly as soon as the trail connects with the final summit slope. The terrain is
easy, mostly grass with a few rocks here and there.
Comments:
I left our new "BC" in Telese Terme after breakfast and had a peaceful drive up to the
trailhead. Quite a few narrow sections on this road, so no need to hurry here.
I left at 0945 and immediately noticed that I had totally forgotteen to load
waypoints and route information into my GPS.
The trail seemed well marked and I decided that this oversight most likely would be
of no concern. Well, that was until I hit 1400 meter and the trail sort of vanished, replaced
by lots of tracks after cows. I knew that the mountain should be more to my left, however it was
certainly out of sight. Several local tops and ridges could be seen and it was not clear at all
what route to take. A pretty nice trail climbed a ridgeline ahead and I decided to follow this.
Higher up, no without any trail, I decided to climb more left and get to some point high enough
to be able to see some more terrain. Indeed, this succeeded as I now could see what was most likely
the peak. From my location, a small descent was needed, but nothing serious. The only small uncertainty
was the possibility that a higher peak was hiding behind the one in clear view. In order to not
risk climbing a wrong peak, I decided to do an asceding traverse that would explore the terrain behind
before I got too high. This worked well and I could quite soon be convinced that there were no higher
terrain except my peak. Thus, the ascent became a sort
of spiral path, but I still arrived by
1200 - so 2:15 up.
The ski area on the back side was now in plain view and,
perhaps a bit surprising, at least 10
people were all over the summit, they had all ascended from the ski-area. (A rather short
route.)
I rested for 15 minutes, picked a more optimal route
back down (described above) and then returned
to my car at 1325, so 1:10 for the descent.
