How to get there:
One may climb this peak from several trailheads. This report is a route from the north, after a fairly long access road.
From Bergen, drive E-16 to Trengereid, fork right on Hwy. 7, continue to the traffic circle just after a tunnel, the road 48 to Eikelandsosen forks right here. Do not take this road, but continue about 1.4 kilometer on Hwy. 7, then turn left at a small place called Frøland.
Drive north to Grønsdalen and the lake there. There is a road that continues, passing Kvitingsvatnet, then climbing all the way to Svartavatnet. This road is most likely closed in winter. It may also be closed by a gate near Kvitingsvatnet, at certain times of year. The trailhead at the upper dam is located at N60.45562, E5.95662, elevation 630 meter.
Route:
Begin along the road if you cannot drive all the way to the trailhead described above. From this Trailhead, follow the red marked cairns/route that climbs the lower part of the ridge. Once on top of the fairly rugged and not very well defined ridge, leave the marked route and head directly towards the summit. It may be best to stay slightly on (climbers) the right hand side of the crest until you are pretty close, then finish the route staying more left.
A track is posted on Peakbagger.
Comments:
I did this climb with my friend Harald. We parked at location N60.46169, E5.92148, elevation 548 meter. There is a downhill here and with potentially slippery snow, we did not want to possibly have problems when driving out.
Thus, we hiked the road to the dam and the trailhead located just at the far side. From here, there is a red marked trail, however, many small cairns and red paint were buried in the snow. We made our way up, this short section is steepish. The snow depth gradually got deeper as we hiked up the ridge to locate the summit.
The ascent took about 2 hours. The summit was quite cold due to some wind, thus a short stay to capture the views, before heading back down. Easier hiking retracing our footsteps in the snow, we soon made the final descent to the dam. Finally, an easy road walk, mostly downhill, back to the car. The overall trip time turned out to be slightly less than 3.5 hours.
Thanks to Harald for good company and for being the photographer on this trip.
